ArtistYear Statement on the Killing of George Floyd

JUN 1, 2020

ArtistYear unequivocally condemns the killing of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who was killed by Minneapolis police. This horrific act, along with the recent deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and Sean Reed, Christian Cooper’s experience in Central Park, and the racist acts threatening the lives so many of our fellow citizens, demonstrates the systemic racism in our country.

We have the privilege of serving students in schools across our nation, students who know too well the impact of racial violence. We stand with our communities and loved ones demanding a more just society and equitable future for all.

Together, as Citizen-Artists, we will use art as a mechanism for creative expression to interpret, process, and elevate one another. Just as we did yesterday, and we will do tomorrow, and the next day, we will dedicate ourselves completely towards democratizing access to arts learning for all youth, no matter their zip code or the color of their skin.
